I believe that the most intimate layers of human experience carry a universal significance. This conviction leads me to consciously intertwine autobiographical elements with themes that transcend the individual and touch upon collective experience and culturally embedded structures. My work spans various media – oscillating between objects, installations, moving image, sound, performance, and minimalist spatial interventions. I strive for formal clarity and conceptual precision, while also seeking to imbue my works with emotional intensity and sensory presence. A key aspect of my practice is the critical reflection of institutional authority, particularly that of the Catholic Church. I am interested in analyzing power dynamics and the ways these structures shape individual experience as well as the broader functioning of society. I investigate the paradoxes and ambivalences these systems produce, and through symbolic, often abstract forms, I create space for a contemplative yet conscious dialogue about responsibility, vulnerability, and the power of individual voice within the social context. I conceive my works as open systems that invite the viewer to actively engage in the construction of meaning. Rather than conveying clear-cut messages, I aim to provoke an introspective process of interpretation. I respond to current social and cultural tensions – addressing issues of queer identity and the rights of the LGBTI+ community, as well as questions of personal and collective responsibility in a global, often polarized world. My works combine a quiet poetics with the urgency of the present, where each gesture is deliberate and carefully considered. I believe that art has the power to open discussions, introduce new perspectives, and facilitate deeper understanding; its transformative potential lies not in direct or immediate impact, but in the gradual and beneath-the-surface shaping of social realities. The central motif of the exhibition is flowers – symbols of life, beauty, and at the same time, its transience. Németh does not view them merely as decorative objects, but examines them as bearers of meanings that transcend their natural cycle. The artist enters their existence just before wilting. With his artistic gesture – applying resin – he becomes the curator of their beauty, the conservator of a moment in which life is still present. The smooth, glassy surface of the preserved flowers evokes a sense of eternity, yet beneath it, a quiet process of transformation takes place. The flowers fade, lose volume, and life gradually slips away from them. Németh thus gently, yet persistently, leads us to reflect on the nature of time and transience. His work does not rely on dramatic gestures, but on silence and contemplation. He poses questions that are as old as humanity itself, yet gives them a new visual form. describe it in encyclopedias. But let's quickly go to its aesthetic properties - the attractive silver leaves on this perennial will immediately catch your eye. Together they create evergreen, even wavy magic carpets. At the same time, these leaves absorb blood very well and help faster healing of wounds, they have antibacterial, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties. For this reason, they function as a natural bandage. In the past, they were also used to treat middle ear inflamation. But let's look at something hidden in this dry description. Care is shown in the background. If we think more deeply, we see that it is not clear who is taking care of whom here - is it the leaves of the perennial that absorb the blood, the remnant of pain, or we who water them? And what about flowers that delight only with their appearance and the reflection of colors on our eyes? Kristian Nemeth's minimalistic and consistently moderate intervention in the Orthodox Synagogue in Kosice opens up precisely this hidden care and birth in a very small circle. The central motif of the exhibition is plants, specifically flowers - but already suspended in time. Nemeth returns us to the period before withering - he puts himself in the position of a converter of their temporary beauty, more precisely, he takes care of its preservation. He asks himself a very old question, but in a new way - can hope be reflected in nature? Or perhaps more precisely, do flowers teach us to cope with death? What do we get in return for our care? https://nemethkristian.com/The-Time-is-Now The Time is Now 2023, exhibition project SNG commissioned the artist Kristián Németh to create a project relating to the position of LGBTI+ people in Slovakia. In three installations, he visually comments on the past, the present and the (desired) future, which might be closer than it seems. With this site-specific exhibition project, SNG joins Rainbow PRIDE Bratislava. The intervention in Rudolf Uher's sculpture The Couple (Earth II), located in the gallery's courtyard, responds to the continued indifference of both legislators and the majority to the demands of queer people for equality and respect. The climbing plant enveloping the sculpture symbolises forgetting and marginalisation. On the other hand, the artist's coloured foils on the windows of the Water Barracks symbolise an embodied vision of living together in love and mutual respect. The uplifting light environment in the interior, which can evoke the light in a Gothic temple and the experience of expanded consciousness, creates an atmosphere of acceptance and a safe space, which is what the Slovak National Gallery desires to be. The third intervention is a discreet, intimate memorial for Juraj and Matúš, young queer people who died in the terrorist attack on Zamocká Street in Bratislava. A drop on one of the windows of the Bridge is a symbolic tear, crying for the lost lives. The evolution of LGBTI+ rights in Slovakia has been slow, and one step forward is often followed by two steps backwards. The exhibition's title refers to the fact that the phrase 'now is not the time' is often used to silence pioneering ideas. However, history teaches us that positive change happens because of people who are not discouraged and choose to act. We invite you to step into a reality where change is within reach. Because there is no other time but now. 18:30:21 +0000 kristiann https://nemethkristian.com/Prayer-for-a-Better-Future Prayer for a Better Future 2023, exhibition project The recent events in Slovakia, the double murder in Zámocká forced me to sober up and perceive the real reality around us, outside of bubble. Slovakia is a strongly Catholic country, where homophobia prevails among the citizens, large part of politicians and church officials perceive LGBTI+ people as inferior, sick, and degraded. This retoric has taken root in workplace, social networks, streets, churches, and families. The result was the death of Matúš and Juraj. The selected works (in dialogue with works by Miloš Alexander Bazovský and Ladislav Mednyánszky), represent a cross-section of my 14 years of work. I created them and released them into the world with the hope that they will contribute to social change and thus improve the situation and status of LGBTI+ people. But nothing has changed, the identities, demands, desires of queer people are constantly overlooked in Slovakia, and their souls and bodies remain stigmatized. The hoped-for better future is still waiting. Kristián Németh The solo exhibition of the visual artist Kristián Németh Oratio pro futuris melioribus / Prayer for a better future naturally follows the intermedial tendencies in his work that freely move from direct institutional criticism to the symbolic level and general themes. In his works, the artist communicates topics related to physicality, intimate and traumatic content, sexual minorities, and power relations in the context of the Catholic Church. His objects, installations, videos and performances combine a minimalist approach and formal reduction with an emphasis on dramaturgy and scenographic tone of exhibition environments. Oratio pro futuris melioribus / Prayer for a better future is a hybrid exhibition project that places a selection of Németh’s emblematic works in a functional dialogue with the oeuvre of Miloš Alexander Bazovský (1899 – 1968) and Ladislav Mednyánszky (1852 – 1919) from the collections of the Liptov Gallery of Peter Michal Bohúň. Németh’s experiment and selective research connect the past with the present, while purposefully reacting to the current political and social situation accelerated by the terrorist attack on Matúš Horváth and Juraj Vankulič outside Bratislava ́s Tepláreň bar. Nothingness that evokes fall and triggers anxiety allows us to feel the experience of being. A column is missing in the left pillar of the portal in the interior of the new apsicial synagogue built in Šamorín in 1912. There’s nothing in its place. The main architectural element is absent. Absence is felt at the current moment. It can result in feelings of despair, hope, tragic horror, nostalgic regret, insecurity, mystery, facilitation. A definitive absence can be accompanied by hopes, fears, waiting, whose vanity will be revealed in time. The installation consists of a red carpeted base and a ceramic casting of the found head.
